Howard Levy

Chapter 315 mourns the passing of long time member Howard Levy at his home in Freehold, New Jersey on January 29th, 2010. Howard was a very active member who rarely missed a chapter meeting unless he was away on a photo shoot. (Click here to read AOPA's obituary)

The Howard Levy Collection represents his life's work as a professional aviation writer and photographer from 1937 until 2010, and contains an estimated 246,000 pieces of photographs, negatives, magazine articles, research, letters, and rare aviation memorabilia.

"Howard Levy Day" was held on May 15th from 11am to 3pm in the Syrek-Mee Aviation Hangar at OldBridge Airport. Howard's family granted Glenn Stott and EAA Chapter 315 permission to display a portion of the collection before was shipped to the Smithsonian air & Space Museum in Washington, DC. A special thank-you to Mark Pfunke and the staff of Syrek-Mee for donating their hangar, to Howie's niece Phyllis Murray and her friend Anne for assisting with the photo exhibits, to Patti Stott and Dana Mandy on the grills, and to the many members of EAA Chapter 315 who helped prepare and run this event.

The Smithsonian Air & Space magazine reserved 6-8 pages in the July 2010 issue for an article Howard was working on when he died. Glenn negotiated with Air & Space to keep Howard's reserved space for a tribute article featuring highlights of Howard's life and career. Glenn agreed to research, scan, and provide captions for over one hundred photographs the editors could choose from, and the editorial staff would use Glenn's research to provide the text.
